Heavy boxes slow collection down and are more likely to split. Use smaller boxes for books, tools and other dense things, and larger ones for light things like bedding.

Packing for storage
A little preparation makes storage safer, easier and cheaper. Pack by room, keep boxes manageable and protect anything fragile before collection.
Protect fragile items
Wrap glass, ceramics and delicate pieces one by one, fill the gaps so nothing moves, and mark the box clearly as fragile.
Furniture
Take legs off tables where you can and keep the screws in a bag taped to the piece. Cover sofas and mattresses so they stay clean.
Label every box
Write the room and a short list of what is inside on two sides of each box, so you can ask us for the right one later.
Clean and dry
Store things clean and completely dry. Empty and defrost fridges and freezers and leave their doors slightly open.
